AUGUSTUS - WEIS LOOKS GOOD ON PAPER By George Elsasser |

Guess here is Weis goes in as favorite, but my coins are going with the one formerly known as Burton … and trust me when I say were this the bad old days of boxing, all pretenders to the throne would first have to pass through Augustusville.
When first seeing him at lightweight, and then again at jr. welter it resulted in a flashback to a similar in style, and equally unappreciated fighter of the 1950s … name was Jimmy Slade out of Jamaica, N.Y.
Slade was avoided like a virus by his peers at 175, even tho’ Jimmy was more a big middleweight in size at 165 … a converted southpaw with a potpourri of moves in the ring and a left hook that got your attention.
And so it was, in his prime he became a globetrotter … wasn’t until the twilight of his career he got to share the ring with the special ones of the day, decision losses in 1954 to future champions Harold Johnson and Floyd Patterson and a KO loss to Patterson in 1955.
But back to Augustus … much like the yesterday Slade, he too gives you a variety of looks … from conventional to unorthodox … jab, feint, a turn here a turn there and an ability to pick up the tempo or slow it down.
And so it appears ESPN2 FNF has scored again … with a throw back show much like the golden club fight days of yesteryear.

Looks from here that ESPN2 Emanuel Augustus (27-19-5, 14 KOs) - Omar Weis (35-4-3, 16 KOs) meeting shapes up as a dandy - and when was the last time you have seen a fighter with 19 outings in the red be the draw Augustus is?
