"OSCAR DE LA HOYA'S LEGACY IS ALREADY TAINTED"

By Aladdin Freeman

I'll skip all the other stuff and get right into it. For everyone that thinks Oscar De La Hoya got ripped off, do two things. First, re-watch the fight with the volume off so the mindless banter that was coming from the HBO commentators' mouths Saturday night won't persuade you. Then when you score it, score this way, ask yourself which fighter would you rather have been, round by round, and I'll bet you come up with a score of 8 to 4 or 7 to 5 in favor of Shane Mosley.

Although I don't like it and I've written about it numerous times before and taken some criticism for it ("It's Boxing... 1 + 1=3") Las Vegas goes out of their way to score fights for the guy who is landing the harder shots and forcing the issue. You don't believe me? Go back and look at Bones Adams vs. Paulie Ayala, you will see the same thing. Ayala is landing all the hard shots and Adams is jabbing away. The same thing happened Saturday night. Hey, these were 3 excellent judges; the only one I had to question was the guy who had Floyd Mayweather, Jr. beating Jose Luis Castillo 116-111. I had Castillo winning that fight myself. So please don't use the excuse that the judges weren't good because they are some of the sport's very best or that they all had a bad night, that is rubbish.

Also if you are a Felix Trinidad fan and you think Oscar won Saturday night please go back and watch Tito's fight against Oscar in 1999 where De la Hoya was clearly running during the later half of the fight and at least this time he was getting hit. Also know this, out of 30 ringside sports writers, 18 scored the fight for Mosley, 8 for De La Hoya and 4 had it a draw.

As for the fight, Shane Mosley may not be the same fighter as he was a couple of years ago, but who knows, because it was very clear Oscar De La Hoya didn't have any intentions of finding out. I can remember all week Oscar saying "I want to put the pressure on Mosley to find out what he still has left." Oscar De La Hoya boxed a little but all those jabs didn't do a thing to stop Mosley from coming forward and fighting on the inside and landing some thunderous body shots that had Oscar clearly fading in the last 5 rounds. Ask yourself who was the more hurt guy in this fight? Who was the guy that looked like he actually tried to win the title by fighting? Shane Mosley, who now is 39-2 is the correct answer. He even tried to get a knockout in the last round and made De La Hoya fight. Yes, Shane Mosley is the guy that dared to be great Saturday evening, not Oscar De La Hoya. Oscar may have had a nice game plan but he didn't go for the win. He jabbed for a while to keep Mosley off of him, but like always when you apply pressure to him, he slows down and he did it again here which allowed Mosley to come back in this fight again.

Oscar calls him self a warrior but he doesn't fight like one. Marvin Hagler, Mickey Ward, and Arturo Gatti, these guys are warriors. There was no fire in his fight plan, I didn't see the same guy who was coming forward vs. a shot Fernando Vargas or Yori Boy Campas. De La Hoya was trying to jab his way to a win and all the while getting hit with power shots. Plain and simple ... you can't win back peddling in Las Vegas, not anymore, and De La Hoya more than anyone else should know this.

Hey, don't feel sorry for De La Hoya. He got a gift decision vs. Ike Quartey where all of a sudden one big round at the end is enough to make up for 7 rounds in a row where he did nothing. Same with his fight vs. Pernell Whitaker, where De La Hoya was dropped in the 9th round yet somehow got the victory; and by the way trying to launch an investigation into the fight is a joke. Did Marvin Hagler(Ray Leonard), Lennox Lewis(Holyfield I), Shane Mosley(Vernon Forrest II), Micky Ward(James Leija), Marco Antonio Barrera(Morales I) try to launch investigations into their fights? How can the fix be in? It makes sense for boxing for De La Hoya to win this fight so he can move up and get trounced by Bernard Hopkins, a man who will knock Oscar De La Hoya out if he ever got the chance to and a guy Shane Mosley has no intentions of fighting.

Don't give me that bullshit that De La Hoya has gotten so much bigger than boxing with his promotional company that boxing needed to fix this fight. Bob Arum was crying again like the baby that he is. I wish I'd had a camera at the first Mosley fight and the Trinidad fight as well. If I had I'm sure it'd would be the wallpaper on many of Felix Trinidad's fans computers. Shame on Bob Arum, Los Angeles was all set to do this fight and ready to pay a lot more money for it, and what does Bob Arum do? He goes to Vegas to try and load the deck his way, for his fighter, and the plan backfired on him because his fighter didn't bring enough heart to the fight. Inside and outside as well, I'm smiling at the thought that Bob Arum threatened to quit. Should he decide to do so, I say, good riddance!

What's next? I think that after this investigation De La Hoya will be the odd man out. He probably will have to fight Bernard Hopkins and that will be a BIG mistake. His "legacy" that he's so worried about while back peddling for 12 rounds will be even more tainted if he steps in with Hopkins. Shane Mosley can probably either fight a shot Fernando Vargas if the HBO bigwigs let it happen, Ricardo Mayorga who should fight Antonio Margarito before he does anything else, or even Cory Spinks. So Mosley has many options, as to whether he's the same fighter as before or not, we will have to wait and see.

One more thing, do you think if the roles had been reversed and Oscar had gotten the nod, Shane Mosley would launch an investigation? I don't think so. It's funny to see Oscar De La Hoya's and Bob Arum's true colors yet again in defeat.
