AN EDITORIAL VIEW ON MIKE TYSON:  WHEN IS ENOUGH, ENOUGH?

Chaos sets in at press conference

Lennox cocks his right, while bodyguard tries to stop Tyson

Mike Tyson strikes again!

Frankly, Mike Tyson, already a convicted felon, has been on a tear of late, having gotten in trouble during an unlawful visit to Havana, Cuba; having gotten in trouble with his wife, Monica, who has filed for divorce on the grounds of adultery. He is in trouble with the Internal Revenue Service, indebted to them for millions of dollars. A rape charge investigation is in the hands of a prosecutor, awaiting his decision on whether to proceed with charges.

He also fired his trainer Tommy Brooks and today went all out in a totally unprovoked and unnecessary attack on undisputed champion Lennox Lewis and his bodyguards at what was to have been a press conference scheduled to announce their engagement in early spring.

As a result of the melee, WBO President José Sulaimán has been taken to a local hospital having suffered undisclosed injuries, and Tyson himself suffered a knot and a cut over his left brow. It has been reported that Lewis suffered a Tyson bite on his leg.

Now, I ask, what else must Mike Tyson do before the powers that be in the sport of boxing ban him for life? Tyson has disgraced the sweet science more than any other boxer in history, showing total disrespect for the sport, its governing bodies and its fans. The Holyfield episode should have been enough to disqualify him for life, after all, when did cannibalism become an accepted part of the sport of boxing?

The "pitbull," "gangsta" attitude has grown old and alarmingly dangerous. Tyson has a huge following of young men who need to understand that there are consequences to criminal behavior. Multi million dollar purses cannot -and should not- rule over law and order, common decency and all that set us apart from animals in the wild.

All too often we watch boxers give their all in the ring earning measly purses, hoping for an opportunity to be seen, to be noticed, to be moved along in their careers. Some die in the process, victims of callous promoters and decadent commissions. There are many who work regular jobs and train, following their dreams of one day becoming full time fighters. In Tyson we have a man who has earned millions and millions of dollars, which have enabled him to purchase luxurious mansions all over the world, luxurious cars and outrageously expensive jewelry, some of which he has conveniently forgotten to pay at times.

Mike Tyson has done absolutely nothing positive or politically correct with his earnings or his stature. He has not given back to the community, to our youth, to the fans, to the sport. The contrary has been his stand. Slay the goose that lays the golden eggs, seems to be his motto.

I want to go on record strongly proposing a lifetime ban on Mike Tyson. Boxing doesn't need him, he has knocked down the sport too many times already. Is he such a special fighter that we should continue to ignore the criminality of his behavior? No, and the day should never come when a fighter, any fighter, is worth that.

Enough is enough already. Tyson needs psychiatric help, he has proven himself to be a danger to himself and others, and should be dealt with accordingly.
