Saturday HBO B.A.D. twin-bill showed unbeaten
"Gitmo gunner" Yuriorkis Gamboa a valid entry in
that hypothetical featherweight special department
- not only retained his WBA version over veteran
Jorge Solis but did it in convincing style.
Opening stanza was pretty much a feeling out
session with both looking to counter - not so, come
round two as Gamboa drops Solis with solid right
hand/left hook combo - the Mexican is again on the
canvas courtesy of Gamboa right hand.
Things get worse near end of round three when a
monster left hook drops Solis again only to be
"saved" by the bell.
Finally, stanza four with Gamboa quickly on the
offense - a right hand and Solis again on the
canvas - no sooner upright it's a second knockdown
before a final barrage of power punches forces
third hack in charge David Fields to call it finis
at the 1:31 mark of the round.
Post Sripts: Yuri Gamboa (20-0, 17 KOs) ~ age 29 -
his sparkling, dominant performance over Solis was
clearly a gem - overcame size/reach edge of highly
rated super featherweight. Is now at prime time to
give unification a shot. Juanma Lopez could well be
in his future.
Post Scripts: Jorge Solis (40-3-2, 29 KOs) ~ age 31
- never had a prayer when unable to penetrate the
Gamboa defense and quickness - handwriting on the
wall surfaced as early as round two. Forty five
kept appointments equal to a career when competing
at them bantam-feather weight classes. Showed heart
but little else last noche.
Scheduled twelve round co-feature with NABF/NABO
featherweight champion Matt Remillard defending
against Miguel Angel Garcia proved a spirited
action affair that would close before the final
stanza.
No sooner the opening bell any fight fan in
attendance or watching over the magic-lantern could
see this one fit the label "styles make fights"
cliche to the letter.
Garcia steals number one with an edge in the power
punching department - Remillard grabs number two on
my unofficial outscoring Mikey - but for the
Connecticut "sharp shooter" it would be his last
hurrah.
Garcia would pick up the output round by round over
three through stanza nine that sees Remillard down
from Garcia left hook - then stanza ten it's two
more trips to the canvas before being saved by the
bell.
The Remillard corner finally calls it a night - it
was clear to everyone else in the joint, referee
Ricardo Vera was enjoying his best seat in the
house, while oblivious that Remillard the "sharp-shooter" had already been shot down, and in need of
someone to pull the plug.
Post Scripts: Mikey Garcia (25-0, 21 KO) ~ age 24 -
circle the name - another good young one to watch
as he matures in age. Solid chin with good
mechanics. If handled with care, will one day swap
the NABF/NABO straps for next level trophies.
Matt Remillard (23-1, 13 KO)
~ age 23 ~ credits for mega-heart - debits shortage
of clout. Punches in combinations with aggressive
style. Good club fighter at best.
Commentator Dept: Warmed the heart to see Nick
Charles working Garcia-Remillard fight after
enduring bout with cancer. Hope he sees another ten
years - but not doing fight commentary. The high
praise to unqualified connected Maxie-Boy Kellerman
tough on the digestive system. Then later in the
telecast there's Maxie fraud interviewing Gamboa as
if interrogating the kid after an Oscar earning
winning performance. The clown is clueless.
