Martin Wade's Loaded Gloves
for the Week Ending February 27, 2011... by Martin Wade
I could trouble you with an "intro" but I
won't, not after what we all just saw last
Saturday night. Hopefully the executives at
HBO saw it, and hopefully they see the wisdom
in allocating resources to smaller guys who
want to fight -as opposed to the allegory of "star making." What Nonito Donaire did is
hopefully a wake up call to those of you who
hold out on giving the little guys love.
Boxing is a simple sport, four-year olds can
understand it and at its base definition it is
the art of harming a competent equal.
Fernando Montiel is more
than a competent equal and yet the networks
and promoters continue to tell you that men
who do not engage "equals" as a matter of "business" are worthy of your admiration. Hell
they don't have to tell you to admire certain
fighters, you do so willingly without
precondition for something as inconsequential
as shared ethnicity. Well, I'll tell you what;
I'm not Filipino but I know what the hell I
saw and hopefully (with objectivity) you did
too. Damnit I promised not to be long winded,
and once again I failed. Alright fight fans,
let's rock 'em up and get after it, ring the
damn bell already.

Let
the selling begin!
Manny and Shane on the road, whipping up a
frenzy with their friendly gestures and
million dollar smiles as they lie to
you. The latest spin is that Shane does
well with guys who come to him. Sounds
familiar? That's because once Evander
jumped the shark that was his excuse/mantra to legitimize his continuing to
fight. Let me decipher the words better
for you: "Stand still and let me hit you," aka the old guy at the hoop gym that
complains that the youngsters should
walk it up more. Shane even said that he
feels like he's doing Floyd Mayweather's
dirty work. Really? That's funny because
to me it looks as if Mosley simply
because he is a known quantity is
profiting off of Floyd's negotiating
position. Trying to sell a so-called
Super Fight on the premise that anybody
when hit can be hurt (when you know who
that will be) isn't inspiring me to
write any "Mosley's got a shot" articles
anytime soon.

Are you
coming down from your Super Bowl hangover
yet? Well fellas you better, cus it's time
to start trolling for roses or you'll be
riding solo real soon. She sat through
that game with you and watched her "man"
regress by 20 yrs. In front of company and
now you owe her. If you're a boxing fan
you're waiting for Fernando Montiel and
Nonito Donaire to get it on pondering if
Boxing will EVER generate 74% of eyeballs
like the Super Bowl. Let me help you with
that, boxing is still trying to generate 3
million PPVs with Tecate and a couple of
Airlines pitching in sponsorship checks.
So uhmm, that would be no. We'd be lucky
if we can get one of our "superstars" in a
Super Bowl commercial, since making TWO
guys "huge" is our overall game plan for
the next two years. Warning; this column
will always take subtle, overt and often
irreverent shots at how boxing is run as a
business and the axis of evil that runs
it. However (Steven A. Smith voice) I
loves me some boxing, just like you, but my
gloves are loaded because I know no other
way to be. So dip in water and let the
plaster of Paris harden, I got work to do.

Shane Mosley wants you to know that Manny Pacquiao was hit by
Antonio Margarito so therefore he can hit him too. And? I hate
when boxers use the selective fighter a beat so and so
therefore rationale, because they hate when we do it. Here's a
cliche for you, styles make fights and just because Margarito
was able to touch him there's no guarantee Mosley will. Mosley
was touching Mayweather early, but once Floyd imposed himself
physically on Shane he started doing this nervous twitchy, "I'm
not sure I want to throw a jab" thing. Remember? What Shane
won't tell you (which you already know) is when Manny is hit,
he bangs his gloves together and hits his opponent 5
times-real hard. He can do that all night while Shane has
about a minute and a half to land something big. Floyd hit the
gas just a little and was merciful (I mean measured) with
Shane and it allowed him to finish. Manny starts with
his foot on the gas; if Shane catches him early he's in a long night
of trouble.

Forget the introductions and formalities, you know who
this is. It's your boy and I'm starting off 2011 in a column format.
Gotta get my consistency on and comment on what the hard game is
bringing us inside and outside of the ring on the steady. Yes, this
means a damned schedule. For those of you who get even a little bit
from what I spit, I'll be cranking one of these out weekly which is why
I got the corny date at the end of my byline. Up there. Since my piece
on B-Hops ignorant "cultural styles" rant the old man actually fought a
fight you didn't fall asleep watching so I'll also be giving props to
Philly's finest. At the risk of rambling on any further I'll get this
load in my gloves and start swinging.
