Last noche ESPN twin-bill saw both
undefeated NABO strap holders retaining
its minor league strap via unanimous
decision -- popular local Fernando
Guerrero (20-0, 16 KOs) in the main bout
and Shawn Porter (17-0, 13 KOs) in the
co-feature.
The middleweight affair proved more a
Guerrero showcase as the southpaw slinger
tossed a near shutout on one card 100-90,
and 99-91 on the other two -- my
unofficial agreed to Guerrero 100-90 in
points and 10-0 under round by round
method.
The transplanted Dominican from Salisbury,
MD displayed too much speed for his
opponent Derrick Findley who arrived with
decent resume of 17-4-1, 11 KOs, not to
mention a laughable sobriquet of
“Superman” -- on this night, “stuporman”
better described his safety first style.
Guerrero enjoying the port side advantage
quickly took control with rapid-fire
combinations that had "superman"
on the defensive.
Post Scripts: Guerrero (21-0, 16s) ~ age
24 - wears the prospect label to the
letter. Mixes the combinations with
assorted flurries going to both body and
head. Still, before upgrading to contender
levels, is still in need of discipline.
Has the tools and equipment but not the
banger the 16 stoppages in a now 21 kept
appointments imply. Circle the name.
Findley
(17-5-1, 11 KOs) ~ age 26 - arrived on
loss to Russian southpaw, undefeated Matt
Korobov, maybe brain trust should have
passed on this Guerrero misadventure.
.............................................................................
The Porter-Anges Adjaho NABF welterweight
affair played to a similar script as the
main event, other than Adjaho’s winning
round four to spare the humility of being
blanked.
Official numbers went Porter 99-91, 99-1,
97-3 -- my unofficial saw it Porter 99-91
in points and 9-1 under round by round
method.
NABF strap or not, Porter more equipped
for the welterweight minor
league level fighters. Last noche
displayed super-quick hands that arrived
in combination form, along with good
defense.
Problem is, the opponent arrived on three
bout losing streak -- and at age 34 with a
now job application at 17-5, 9 KOs played
a survival role and never had a prayer.
Shawn Porter (18-0, 13 KOs) ~
age 23 - nice club fighter - could well
grab a couple other straps to go with the
NABF belt - still, a peek at the
welterweight picture at the major league
level carries names Berto, Souleymane
M’Baye, to name just a few.
